Balayage pricing can vary significantly — even within a small region like Central Otago. It’s one of the questions we get asked most often, and we’d rather give you an honest, detailed answer than a vague range that doesn’t help you plan.

Why Balayage Pricing Varies
Balayage is one of the most skill-dependent techniques in hairdressing. Unlike foil highlights, which follow a relatively systematic placement, balayage is hand-painted — the result depends almost entirely on the stylist’s eye, their understanding of how light falls on different face shapes and hair textures, and their ability to blend seamlessly. The time required varies enormously depending on your hair’s starting point, length, thickness, and how significant a change you’re looking for.
What’s Typically Included in a Balayage Service
A full balayage service typically includes the lightening application, a toning service to achieve the final colour (often a separate step from the lightener), a gloss or treatment to close the cuticle and add shine, and a blowdry. At Revolver, we use Moroccanoil Colour throughout, which includes conditioning agents in the formula itself. We always quote after assessing your hair at a complimentary consultation — not blindly from a price list.
Why the Cheapest Option Rarely Wins
Balayage done poorly is one of the most expensive hair problems to correct. Uneven lightening, patchy toning, visible lines of demarcation — these require hours of correction work that costs significantly more than getting it right the first time. When you’re weighing cost, factor in the correction cost too. A skilled colourist who charges more and delivers consistent, lasting results will almost always cost you less over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does balayage cost at Revolver Hair Studio?
We quote after a complimentary consultation, because the time and product required varies significantly by hair length, thickness, starting point and the look you’re after. We don’t price balayage blindly — an accurate quote is only possible after seeing your hair in person.
Does balayage include toning?
It should — toning is what gives balayage its final colour and removes any unwanted warmth from the lightened sections. At Revolver, toning is always part of the balayage process. Some salons price it separately, so it’s worth asking.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
Typically 2.5–4 hours for a full balayage service, depending on hair length and thickness. We’ll give you a timing estimate at your consultation.

How often do I need to refresh my balayage?
Most balayage looks great for 12–16 weeks before needing a toner refresh or new application. Toning alone is quicker and less expensive than a full new application — your stylist will advise you on the right maintenance schedule for your hair.
