Balayage is designed to be low-maintenance — but “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance.” The right routine between appointments is the difference between a balayage that looks fresh at 16 weeks and one that’s brassy, flat and dull at 8. Here’s what we recommend to our clients at Revolver Hair Studio.

Use a Colour-Safe, Sulphate-Free Shampoo

Sulphate-free shampoo is the single most impactful product change you can make for colour longevity. Sulphates clean the hair effectively but strip colour molecules in the process, accelerating fade. Moroccanoil’s Moisture Repair and Hydrating Shampoos are sulphate-free and formulated to clean gently while supporting colour integrity. In Central Otago’s dry climate, moisture retention is doubly important — sulphate-free formulas help with both.

Use a Purple or Blue Toning Shampoo Weekly

Brassiness — the warm yellow and orange tones that emerge as balayage fades — is the most common complaint between appointments. A purple-pigmented or blue-pigmented shampoo used once or twice a week neutralises warm tones before they become obvious. Moroccanoil’s Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo is our recommendation for blonde and light balayage. Use it in place of your regular shampoo, leave for 3–5 minutes, and rinse. The difference after a few weeks of consistent use is significant.

Protect Against Central Otago’s UV

UV radiation accelerates colour fade — and Central Otago has some of New Zealand’s highest UV exposure. Apply a UV-protective spray or leave-in treatment before spending time outdoors. Moroccanoil’s Protect and Prevent Spray was specifically designed for this purpose — it shields colour from UV and environmental damage while providing heat protection for styling.

Deep Condition Weekly

Lightened hair is more porous than virgin hair, which means it loses moisture faster — particularly in Central Otago’s dry climate. A weekly deep conditioning mask replenishes what the environment and daily washing remove. Moroccanoil’s Intense Hydrating Mask is our recommendation — 10 minutes with heat is ideal, or leave in overnight as a treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop my balayage going brassy?

Use a purple or blue toning shampoo 1–2 times per week, protect from UV with a dedicated hair sunscreen product, use sulphate-free shampoo to slow colour fade, and wash hair less frequently in cool to lukewarm water. Come in for a toner refresh every 8–12 weeks if needed.

How often should I wash balayaged hair?

2–3 times per week is ideal for most balayage — washing less frequently reduces colour fade and moisture loss. Use dry shampoo between washes if needed.

What Moroccanoil products are best for balayage maintenance?

Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo for toning, Moisture Repair or Hydrating Shampoo for daily washing, Intense Hydrating Mask for weekly conditioning, and Protect and Prevent Spray for UV protection. We can recommend a tailored routine in studio.

When do I need a balayage toner refresh?

When your highlights start looking more yellow-orange than the cool, fresh tone you left the salon with — usually between 8–12 weeks. A toner refresh is quicker and less expensive than a new lightening application, and keeps your colour looking intentional.
